GOALS GET YOU GOING
by Les Brown
Goals give you a purpose for taking life on. People who live without goals have no purpose, and it is obvious even in their body language. They are on permanent “Idle,” they slouch, they list from side to side. Their conversations dawdle. They telephone you: “Hey, I’m just calling. I wasn’t doing anything, so I thought I’d call you.” Well, don’t call me. I’ve got things to do.
Many people just muddle through life. They don’t read informational material; they d…

WORDS TO LEARN BY
by John C. Maxwell
In my years of studying leadership and evaluating leaders, I have stumbled across a leadership shortcoming that continually amazes me. Leaders will manage a team, work with the same individuals every day, yet they hardly know anything about their people! These leaders have never prioritized acquainting themselves with the dreams, thoughts, hopes, opinions and values of those they lead.
The best leaders are readers of people. They have the intuitive ability…

Psst -- hey -- com'ere. I've got a secret to tell you…
Sometimes prospects will stall you, sometimes they will lie to you, sometimes they won't tell you the real reason they won't purchase. When a prospect gives you some lame excuse (stall) about why they won't buy now, he's really saying, "not yet."
There are two basic types of stalls. People stalls and thing stalls.
Thing stalls are when prospects say -- I'm too busy now, your price is too high, I have too many other obligations.
Frustrati…

CHANGE BEGINS WITH CHOICE
by Jim Rohn
Any day we wish; we can discipline ourselves to change it all. Any day we wish; we can open the book that will open our mind to new knowledge. Any day we wish; we can start a new activity. Any day we wish; we can start the process of life change. We can do it immediately, or next week, or next month, or next year.
We can also do nothing. We can pretend rather than perform. And if the idea of having to change ourselves makes us uncomfortable, we can remain…

Ajita asked: "What is it that smothers the world and makes it so hard to see? What is it that pollutes the world and seems to threaten it?" The Buddha answered: "It is ignorance that smothers, and it is carelessness and greed that make it invisible. The hunger of craving pollutes the world, and the pain of suffering causes the greatest fear."
- Sutta Nipata

Divorce is hard on everyone. Sometimes we forget how hard it can be on animals.
Our son and his wife divorced a few years ago. Many of us in the family were devastated, including Missy and Dena. Missy is our Dandi Dinmont Terrier. Dena, a Rat Terrier, belonged to our son's family. Though the dogs are both terriers, they looked and acted nothing alike. The only similarity was that they both came from homes where they were loved like a member of the family.
Dena had been my son's dog, but when t…

Life can only be understood backward but it must be lived forward.
~Soren Kierkegaard
In our home it was natural to fear our father. Even our mother was afraid of him. As children, my sister and I thought every family was like that. Every family had an unpredictable dad who was impossible to please and a praying mama who was there to protect the children. We thought God planned it that way.
We were good children. Mama was always telling us we were, even if Daddy couldn't see it. Part of this w…

Two frogs fell down a well. A group of frogs gathered to watch, and they yelled down at the frogs, "You'll never get back up!" One of the frogs became discouraged and gave up and drowned. The other frog kept jumping and eventually got out of the well. The frogs that had been watching asked, "Why did you keep trying when we told you you'd never make it?" The frog replied, "Oh, I thought they were words of encouragement!"
My mom told me that story after the doctors determined that I had osteosarc…

"Janice, we'll never understand why Frankie had to die, but we know God wanted you to live. Frankie will always be by your side. You'll never be alone."
Those three short sentences, spoken by my wise parents in the aftermath of a DeWitt, New York, polio epidemic that ravaged our family and community, have made all the difference.

I have eyes that are said to be "cow brown," and my long blond hair is my best feature. My nose is a little too big; my face is oval shaped. I am not overweight, but I'm not skinny either. The only way to describe my height is "vertically challenged."
I'm relatively happy with my appearance, but where did I get it? Do I share the same features as some unknown stranger? Oftentimes, while walking down the st…

THE LOYALTY FACTOR: WHY YOU SHOULD PLAN FOR YOUR FUTURE EMPLOYABILITY NOW
by Connie Podesta
(Part 2 of 2 - Continued from Tuesday, October 13)
In today's ever-changing workplace, the meaning of "loyalty" is quickly evolving. Gone are the days when employees stayed with an organization for 20 or more years, or when employers tried to guarantee an employee's job until retirement.
The fact is that you alone are responsible for taking charge of your professional life. And you owe it to yourself to…

DEVELOP A CLEAR VISION
by Brian Tracy
The one quality that all leaders have in common is that they have a clear and exciting vision for the future. This is something that only the leader can do. Only the leader can think about the future and plan for the future each day.
TAKE THE TIME TO THINK
Excellent leaders take the time to think through and develop a clear picture of where they want the organization to be in one, three and five years. Leaders have the ability to communicate this vision in…
